It’s nearing the end of April, and just in time, I’ve finished my April goal for A Lovely Year of Finishes!
In December 2011, my friend and housemate got married. Their colors were black, white and red. I had been quilting for three months, and I told her that I was going to make her a wedding quilt. I knew it should be black, white and red, and that she loved batiks. She picked a pattern and I started collecting fabric.
Over a year later, and I hadn’t even cut out the pieces for this thing. So cutting the pieces became my goal for the month. Over 3000 pieces later, and it’s all done! Man it feels good to have that over with. It didn’t even takeย thatย long once I started working on it. The pieces are all bagged according to size so they don’t get mixed up.
Next up, 64 of these blocks (this is just laid out, not sewn). This is the most traditional and precise thing I’ve worked on to date. I admit, I’m a little intimidated.

Wow! That’s a lot of pieces! Can’t wait to see the blocks come together!
*whimper* I might just chain piece and do it factory style so that I don’t get confused by what goes where. There are a lot of different components!
you can doooooooo it!!!!
Hahahaha thanks! I am thinking if I just chain piece it, maybe it’ll be less confusing about what piece goes where… There’s so many components in each block!
Oh, wow!! Nothing simple about the cutting or assembly of this one. It’s going to be so gorgeous, though!!!
Thank you. ๐ I think I might be able to factory assemble these since all 64 blocks are the same. And then maybe I won’t get quite as lost about what goes where? Maybe? It could happen, right? I sure hope it looks nice when it’s done. It’s so outside my normal aesthetic that it’s hard to tell. lol
Wow! That’s a ton of pieces! But I’m sure you will make a lovely quilt! Can’t wait to see it!
Thank you! The pattern isn’t something I normally would have picked, but I think it’ll look very striking, especially with the colors. ๐ Fingers crossed, anyway! lol
I have to echo Charlotte and say Joo CAN DO EEET
Hahaha thank you! I figure factory assembly style is the way to go on this one, and chain piece the crap out of it!
Those little ones look like confetti – OMG, it’s going to be great and not just because it’s batik ๐ Counting parts is something I try and avoid and yet it’s fun when you put it that way.
Well when you have the instructions to cut 1348 1.5″ squares in white, and 1088 1.5″ squares in red, it’s easy to guesstimate the total. ๐
The smallest squares are 1.5″ x .75″. And there are 128 of them. Just…what have I gotten myself into?!?!
Ahh this is going to be amazing! And I am intrigued by this outrageous tally of pieces (!) Geometric patterns that won’t translate into speedy strip-piecing methods tend to give me pause, so hats off to you, lady!
I plan the chain piece the heck out of it! And in retrospect, I REALLY should have strip pieced it, because it would totally work for that. I just…didn’t really think about it and followed the directions blindly. ๐
