I really love seeing all the beautiful quilts during the Blogger’s Quilt Festival, hosted at Amy’s Creative Side, so this time I’ve decided (admittedly a little last-minute) that I would enter some of my quilts!
My first entry is for the Doll and Mini-Quilt category. I’m entering my Angry Birds quilt that I made earlier this year for a paper-pieced swap, and the first time I designed my own paper-piecing patterns.
When I was in the 3×6 virtual bee, one of my hivemates and I decided to do a side swap for a picture-based paper-piecing block. I did some flickr stalking, and found out that she also was an alumnus from the video game industry, so I had to do something gaming related! So some pinterest stalking later, and I decided to make this angry bird mini quilt. I started out just making the red angry bird, whose pattern is available from Fandom in Stitches. Well, once it was made, I had a vision of four in a grid, each a different color. And it wouldn’t Go. Away. The problem is there were no paper-pieced patterns of a similar style for the other birds.
So I finally made my own in Illustrator. I had no idea what I was doing, and I made some pretty dumb errors, but by the last one I felt like I sort of had the hang of it! This was just a ton of fun to make, and I’m glad I went ahead and took the time to make the vision in my head. Here’s the back, a pac-man print and some hanging pockets in case my partner decided she wanted to hang it.
