It’s Fashion Week in New York, which means that it’s time for Pantone to announce their Fall Fashion Color report for 2014.
Radiant Orchid of course makes an appearance (the color of the year almost always shows up in both the spring and fall color reports) along with blues, red, gold and some neutrals. I ran it through the palette builder to find the closest Kona solids.
I generally prefer to have my colors sorted — it makes it easier for me to see what’s going on — so I went ahead and did that here.
With three purples in there (including the red-violet on the left), I guess we’re going to see a lot of purple clothes this fall. This palette is pretty dark, and I have to say that in this case I’m glad the quilting world doesn’t necessarily adhere to the fashion world. The sangria color is definitely my favorite of the bunch.
What do you think? Any of these colors grab your interest?

gads, YAWN. i am a total cool color & mellow color person and the only 2 i even like much are the magenta and orange red. i like the green ok, but….. and 2 blues so close to each other? and what’s worse is the way they all look together. did i mention gads? and YAWN? i must’ve gotten up on the wrong side of the bed.
oh i do like the orchid, too…but then i wonder why they wasted a space on a lavender so close….i think a now unemployed intern did this.
ok, i’ve had 3 sips of coffee…i definitely like it better when it is sorted like you did. i’m sure it will grow on me, as i am always psyched for color tides to turn, and to start enjoying different colors and combos that i don’t at first. we’ll see. (:
I think you’re single-handedly skewing my comment count. ^_^
I’m usually pretty open minded about color, but I’m having trouble loving these. Perhaps your right, some time will heal all. π And I suppose alone, each color is fine, it’s just together that it doesn’t sing. π
Don’t blame Pantone, blame the fashion designers! They pull the colors from the fashions being put out by designers. At least, that’s my understanding.
HAhahahaah I was maybe a little cranky when I wrote this post (I’ve been sick, and Eli tells me I get cranky when I’m sick) but really…they’re just so uninspiring. π
I have to agree with you Jody. Yawn, yawn, yawn. Nothing really dark, like a navy. It would be a year of just blue clothes for me, because I can’t really wear any of the other colors. Ruby–looks like a poor quality garnet to me. Radiant orchid and mauve mist? I’ll leave them for someone else. Looks like a year of wearing the same ol’ same ol’.
Yessss, why the lack of navy love?! π
I tend to wear mostly black, so I generally gravitate towards winter clothes instead of fall clothes anyway. π I’ll probably get some accessories in their “Sangria”/cerise color, though. π
The first 5 together (in your sorted arrangement) would be in interesting twist on patriotic colors should the need arise to make a 4th of July quilt anytime soon.
Interesting! The yellow would make it look vintage, but the Sangria/Cerise would give it some freshness. π If only I had any need to make a 4th of July quilt! π
It’s a bit dreary, isn’t it?
I think if that yellow were more of a yellow-green, it’d do a lot to brighten up the place. π But all the colors have a real darkness to them this season!
Some of those are definitely a little boring, but I do love the cerise, blues, and yellow. Good thing we don’t have to follow by these rules:) Will be interesting to see how it plays out though.
That cerise is the one I really like. π It would be interesting to take a look at last years fabric lines vs. last year’s pantone list, and see just how much overlap there is.
not a huge fan… and where the heck are you seeing sangria?
Sangria is the name for the Pantone color that is close to Kona Cerise. π The names are on the diagonal in the image.
I guess I will stick with black with hints of colour in my wardrobe. It is, in my humble opinion, horrid.
That sounds a lot like my wardrobe! π There’s not a lot of these colors that I think I would want to wear, let alone look good in!
They are pretty all right. I would skip the blue and green and I’m good, lol. I fancy the one close to magenta. I seen a lot of it at the Olympics. They have pretty cool graphics too you should talk about that next, lol.
Oooh good point about the Olympics! I love their quilty banners, a LOT. Like I want to make them as a quilt a lot. π I figure with enough AMH fabric, it’d be possible!
Speaking of the Olympics, have you noticed that one team seems to have jackets that are made from old quilts? I can’t tell you which country, but I had noticed them in some of the winner’s pictures.
Do you mean these: http://static01.nyt.com/images/2014/02/07/sports/CLOTHING2silo/CLOTHING2silo-master495.jpg
That’s the US. π Or are you talking about different jackets?
I am loving all the quilt inspiration at the Olympics this year!
I’ll have to pay more attention, as I am watching things via the internet. Will let you know if I see what I saw again. ;}
Block out the yellow and the green, and it isn’t a bad palette. Not that I would wear it!
I certainly wouldn’t wear them all at once. π I do wear that grey color a lot…that’ll make me kinda trendy, right? π
Yes, that is what I saw. Dreadful when you see the whole thing. Shirtings, and whatever was left on the cutting room floor.
I went and read up about how they came up with it, and it’s actually based on an antique quilt. :O The original was made from old clothing, which is why it looks how it does. For some reason that makes me kinda love it. π The low volume/muted tones don’t hurt either!
I don’t know about these! The Aurora Red is interesting. Thankfully orchid is in the mix! Dreary mix!
I really think it’s that yellow that’s killing it for me. While the yellow is a beautiful color, I don’t really like what it does to these colors. It needs a punchier contrast to give it some liveliness. I suppose in fashion you don’t generally use all the colors together, though, so I guess that’s something. π
I love the butterscotch but not with any of those other colours. I agree the palette is not very inspiring. It’s probably just me but it has a 90s hip hop vibe to it, the clothes worn then were these kind of colours.
*nod* I like these colors individually but definitely not together. It’s like Depressy McDepression all together. I didn’t follow the hip hop scene in the 90s (I can tell you all about the geek scene, though!) but I’d believe that the colors hail to that era!
Yeah, I am going to agree with most of your commenters – these colours are alright individually, but kind of a hot mess all together. I do really like the Sangria/Cerise colour, especially going into Autumn here.
yes! That Cerise/Sangria is the beacon of interestingness. π I don’t know if Pantone picks the colors from global trends or just focuses on the US, but hopefully you get more interesting colors down there! π
Did anyone else notice that the model in the drawing is wearing a colour that is totally not part of the fall palette? I think the yellow looks too gray and the taupe looks too dark.
Hahaha good catch! I’d actually wear the colors she’s got going on! π
Ok, so this delights me – swap out the yellow & green for a nice bright fuschia and this is what my wardrobe looks like! Yet another reason to be so darn happy for a purple Pantone year : )
good for you, sarah! i love (the/all) purple, too (:
Well you are totally set to be in style this fall! π A think a fuchsia or a chartreuse would help me enjoy this palette a bit more. π I /am/ definitely loving that it’s a year of purple!
As a group, and even as individuals, I don’t love it, but when you put them into doubles or triples, I think it works. The blues with the grey; the pink and purples; the red, mustard and pink… It has that warm, cozy, almost muddy feel that I associate with autumn. But I’m probably not going to make much out of this palette.
E xx
That’s a really good point. They do work better in smaller groupings. Which makes sense, as in fashion you’re not going to use the entire palette at once. π I just get grumpy because I like my bright, saturated colors. π
Blah… I’m sticking to black with a splash of jewel tones or brights, these are not my colours. On the plus side I don’t want to rush out and buy anything new because I love the colour, yeay!
HAhahhaha that’s a great way to look at it! π Of course designers will be offering things that aren’t in these colors, but hopefully your impulse shopping will be minimized. π
