I always get excited around this time of year because all the color of the year stuff starts to get announced! While Pantone is still holding their color of the year under wraps, the paint companies have already released their winners.
Sherwin-Williams announced that their Color of the Year for 2015 is Coral Reef! Coral’s been a pretty hot color for a while in the textile world (I had no trouble finding fabric samples that matched it unlike say…Radiant Orchid) but I guess it hasn’t really made the jump to interior design until (according to Sherwin-Williams) next year.

Well, it looks very 1950s to me, which may seem good, but I’m over coral already.
Everything that’s old is new again! π It does have a bit of a retro feel to it. I actually really like coral, but I prefer the redder/more saturated version of it.
Coral is not my thing, but it’s better than aqua! I’m so tired of all the aqua in quilts and at the fabric store.
You know that aqua and coral are really quite nice together, right? π They can hang out together when you kick them to the curb.
I think we’re moving past the “omg everyone is doing aqua” stage of fabric releases, but blues have always been popular.
Yeah, I’m good with this one. Could be worse π
There are few more “color of the years” from various companies, so I can say with confidence that yes, it could be worse. lol
I’m not a fan of coral and I agree with the above comment that it look 1950’s. I think that it will be hard to find coordinating colors which work well. In my mind, coral plays second fiddle and it will be hard to make it a focus color and then get other colors to jump in with supporting roles. Even in the Benjamin Moore table in your example the color sort of was blah. I can’t see it as ‘the color of the year’. If there are other companies which also proclaim a color of the year it will be interesting to see what they come up with.
There are other companies that are doing color of the year! π I’m going to share another one next Monday but I assure you, if you want a color that pops you are not going to be impressed. lol
I keep meaning to do a coral post (although I prefer the more red variant of the color) talking about what to pair it with and such, so maybe that will give you ideas. Y’know, if you’re stuck having to use the color even though you don’t want to. π
As a glass color, I love it! Every time I find one of the new odd batches of coral I don’t have yet I pounce on it. I do love this color in jewelry too – it looks lovely with rose gold, yellow goldβ¦ Weirdly, I don’t think I’d choose it for anything elseβ¦. house/home, clothing, etc. It looks a little dated to me somehow – maybe it’s that it reminds me of a duvet cover I had as a teenager, which was a loooong time ago. I dunno. It will be interesting to see whether it takes off. And I can’t wait until Pantone come out with theirs. I was literally OBSESSED with Radiant Orchid. Still am, actually π
Oh man, my room was all dusty rose when I was growing up. Which was cooler than this coral but *shudder*. I love coral with jewelry. Maybe because jewelry tends to be neutrals and slightly toned down colors (okay, not glass, but stones and metal) and coral really pops because of it. π
I love every color though, so fat lotta good I am. Well okay, except dusty rose.
Pantone should be announcing their color around December 9th! SOOON. I can’t wait!
Perhaps I’m the only one but I love coral! I like that it has a vintage vibe and to me it’s a very happy colour! Thumbs up π
I think it’s the vintage vibe that people are not liking, based on the comments. π So maybe it’s just a matter of whether you’re into vintage or not! I am usually drawn to the more red variants of coral, but I could see this paired with some blue-greens and looking quite nice.
I’m liking it too! As I read through the comments here, I was just starting to think “I’ll just sit down in the gutter by myself and the pretty colours” lol!
Ahhhh, don’t hang out in the gutter! The fun thing about these colors of the year is that often the general impression is not favorable, but it shifts by the end as it starts cropping up all over the place and people get a feel for how it could be used. Of course there’s also the “omg I’m so sick of this color” thing that happens, too… lol
I’m down with coral, but I don’t think it is a very universal colour to design with for interiors or quilts. I feel like the color of the year should be considered the new neutral, and I can’t see this or radiant orchid (<— get out of my house) ever being that. I'm still banking on a cool colour rather than warm being played out by Pantone.
If you look through the Pantone colors of the year, they have only done something that I’d consider a neutral once. They’re not looking for the new neutral, they’re looking for the new “it” color, and are actually more focused on fashion than interior or quilts. I’m going to post Benjamin Moore’s choice for color of the year next week, and since they are more about interior it is definitely more of a neutral. π Although given what little I’ve seen of your design style in your house, I’m not sure you’ll like that one either… lol
I don’t like that colour at all, much prefer the orchid from last year! π
Oh don’t you worry! This isn’t the pantone color. π Pantone is the one that picked Radiant Orchid, and they haven’t chosen their color yet. Well, they probably have, but it’s not announced yet.
Sherwin-Williams color of the year last year was “Exclusive Plum” which was a really greyed out deep violet.

I really should have linked that in the post!
Oh it was me that didn’t read your post properly!
No worries! It still would have been good to link it. π I’ll try to make it more obvious for Monday’s post. Which will be Benjamin Moore’s color of the year. Everyone’s getting in on this color of the year thing now!
I happen to like coral. I like peach, too. In fact, I have a pair of fine wale coral cords that I occasionally wear. Although I wouldn’t paint a room that color…..I’m excited to see everyone else’s colors!
I had to look up what fine wale cords was! Man I am useless when it comes to fashion. π They sound awesome, though!
I think the color would be a bit much for a full room, but I think it’s a fun accent color.
I like coral, in fact I just picked some out to go with black and some gold for a small clutch.
Ohh coral would go beautifully with black and gold. π Nice choice! π
