This has been such a fun week of sewing for me. I finished two projects and a few blocks, have another well on its way, and bought fabric today for my next quilt!
Finished Projects – 3
First up is my beloved garden fence quilt. I had almost finished when I last posted about it, but now it’s got a fun orange binding that makes me smile whenever I see it. This is the first quilt I’ve ever made for me to keep; all the others have been given away to family and friends. I am writing this blog post while snuggled under it on the couch, listening to the rain. There is something so satisfying about being kept warm by something you made for yourself!

Next is my rather strange “Civilization” quilt, made as my challenge quilt for the South Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild’s photo-inspiration challenge. This was really quick for me to put together, as it’s only 2′ long. It will be a wall hanging for the room where we play board games in our next apartment. Here’s the final quilt! And the inspiration photo is over here.

This was a strange quilt for me. My first time designing my own quilt from scratch, and lots of mistakes were made along the way! But overall I think I’m happy with it. I like how abstract it is while still clearly showing the territories in the game. This was also my first time doing free-motion quilting, and I had a blast! I really want to make more mini quilts. You know, to practice.

Finally, I decided to play around with making some asterisk blocks. These are my three interpretations on the asterisk: off-center, reversed, and wonky. I think I like the wonky one the best!

In-Progress – 1
Coming off the high from making my Mischevious Gnome messenger bag a couple of months ago, I decided I was going to make myself a purse! This project got put on hold for a while, but today I got it to a point where I’ve almost finished it. The pattern is Valori Wells‘s “Mina Bag”. This just needs me to finish the closure, put on a cute button (I adore buttons), and do a bit more top-stitching and it will be done!

New Projects – 1
For the first time in a while, I don’t have any planned quilts in my queue, or any baby quilt deadlines! So I decided that I would play with a beta version of our Palette Builder tool (coming soon for everyone to play with!) and make a quilt with a palette from a recent vacation. Here’s the photo of the Great Salt Lake, and the palette I built from it with our tool.

I had a fun trip down to our local fabric store, Hart’s Fabric, and picked out the fabrics I felt best matched. I’ve been wanting to do a solids quilt for a while, but just couldn’t resist the koi fish….

Not sure what pattern I’m going to do yet with this! I would love to hear suggestions.
Thanks again to Lee over at Freshly Pieced for hosting the WIP Wednesday link party!

Love the Garden fence quilt. I’m such a fan of double sided quilts.
The Palette Builder sounds really interesting – love how well you matched the fabrics.
Thanks! Double sided quilts are more work, but I think they’re definitely worth the effort.
And we’re really excited about the palette builder, and hope to get it ready for public release soon!
LOVE the garden fence quilt. The back is amazing! Have fun with FMQ. It’s hard to stop once you get started. I practice while making doll quilts for charity with Stitchin’ Therapy. Just Google “Get your Mrs. Clause On” for more info.
Thanks!! Making doll quilts for charity is such a good idea. I love how much the quilting community likes to give back. I’ve really been wanting to do some quilts for charity, but big quilts can be so overwhelming, so love the idea of making doll quilts.
Your garden fence is beautiful and it sounds like you are already getting great use of it 🙂
Thank you!! Definitely getting great use out of it. 🙂 I spent a lot of my time working on my laptop on the couch, and it’s still a little chilly at night over here!
Congrats on finishing Garden Fence and for keeping it to enjoy. Looking forward to playing with the palette builder, have fun.
Thanks Karen! We’ll be looking for some local testers soon, I think, and it would be great to get your feedback. 🙂
Oh man, I love crinkly quilts! The orange binding is perfect on your “Garden Fence,” too. That palette builder tool looks like a lot fun. For your “Great Salt Lake” quilt – what about stacked coins? The coins could be the earth tones, and the sashing between the coins could be the water tones. Maybe?
Ooooh, I LOVE the idea of doing stacked coins, thanks! To the design wall! 🙂
What fun to see your thought process carried out, your inspiration picture, the palette, the fabric and then the quilt… are you done yet??? or are you snuggling under your gorgeous garden fence quilt? Your Salt Lake quilt is going to be beautiful with that palette.
I admit I’ve been spending a bit more time on the couch lately with my garden fence quilt. 🙂 But I want to get started on the Salt Lake quilt as soon as I’ve finished the purse. Maybe this weekend.
I like your civilization quilt—very interesting choice of colors!
Thanks! 🙂
