I started a new project (because I don’t have enough WIPs? I don’t know.) Apparently, I’m not done with aqua, orange and grey, though.
The project is called Red Dragonfly because it’s based on a palette from a picture I took of a red dragonfly. I’ve always been fascinated by dragonflies, so I thought it’d be interesting to make a quilt inspired by the colors.
I picked the colors and fabric before picking a pattern (which is backwards from how I like to do things generally), so I waffled quite a bit on what to make with these fabrics. However, after doing the Molli Sparkles Broken Herringbone QAL post, I really wanted to play with the zig zag layout, and the double stripes remind me a bit of dragonfly wings. So I decided I’d give it a go! I’m pretty sure the yellow on the left has too much white in it, but I’ll do a test block to see. It’s so hard to find the right yellows!
I think this is how I’m going to lay out the colors, but of course it’s always up for change until it all gets sewn together. I’m not sure if this is going to end up as 9, 12 or 16 blocks. As you can maybe tell, this is not the most planned out quilt I’ve done.
Hopefully it will cool down a little bit this weekend and I’ll be able to get some sewing done. It’s been too hot to use the iron in the afternoons, and it takes a long time for the house to cool down. It’s really cutting into my sewing time. Unacceptable!

Beautiful fabrics and color scheme! I like the way you are thinking of laying out the blocks!
Thank you! 😀 I managed to get two of the blocks done, and I’m hoping that will be motivation to get the rest done!
Your fabric pull is beautiful. Looking forward to seeing how your idea plays out. Hope you get some cooler weather this weekend!
I’m looking forward to it, too! It’s so different between doing the color drawing and using actual prints. The weather did turn cooler, and it’s SO much nicer. I’m actually getting some sewing done again. 🙂
I love this color palette. I thought it was an unusual combination until my daughter chose it for her wedding, and it really grew on me. Your fabrics are wonderful! Can’t wait to see how it turns out. Coincidentally,I just ordered a Lush bundle that has similar colors. I’m getting excited to start playing with it.
Oooh I bet her wedding was beautiful. 😀 I like the way the grey kind of grounds the colors a bit and keeps them from reverberating quite as much.
I got a few prints from the Lush reprint, but need to find some more! I love them!
Oh my goodness! Your (newest) version is going to be spectacular!
Thank you! 😀 I finished two of the blocks and have gotten a chance to see how it will look together. I’m really excited!
Oh I’m looking forward to seeing the finished object! I love how you got your colour palette from a photo.
Thank you! I have two blocks done, and am hoping to squeak in another one this evening! I should hopefully have the (small) top done by next week. 🙂
I love this layout for the QAL! Are yoy planning on nixing all the sashing in between blocks or keeping that white?
Hi Stephanie!
I ended up doing a thin sashing. Because the blocks don’t line up exactly, I thought it might look weird without it. I just posted a preview of the quilt top today, so if you are interested, you can take a look at how it came out!
