Happy day! Version 2.1 of the palette builder is now available to play with here:
http://www.play-crafts.com/blog/palettebuilder2/
Kona matching or hex value matching is available on the right hand side. To switch, use the drop down box at the top.
I’d love your feedback! Also, I need your opinions on a couple of questions I have for you.
Right now, the share and save buttons only share/save the image and palette. Would you all prefer it to save/share the list of Konas (or hex values)? Would you like the choice?
On a scale of 1-10, how important is it to you that you could re-order or sort the colors in the palette?
Thanks everyone for your feedback!

I would love to be able to save the hex/kona info as well, because it would save me having to find a pencil. As to the reordering of swatches, I guess I am about a two.
Thanks so much for this tool – it’s fab! (and I said “tool” – hehehehehehe)
You can technically copy and paste it, but yah it’s a drag. I’m gonna start looking into making it save the kona/hex stuff today. π Hopefully it won’t be too difficult! Thanks for your feedback!
Congrats on the update to your Palette Builder! It is such a great program. Does Kona know about this? If so, I hope they are helping to promote it!
Thank you so much! π Yep, the Kona folks know about it. We made sure to get their permission first. That was one of the reasons I didn’t want to announce it sooner than I did. I assume they will promote it when I tell them it’s live. I wanted to give my subscribers a first pass at it, though. π I think I’ll make it save the photo with the kona or hex palettes first, then tell them it’s live. It seems most people want that functionality. π
This is a wonderful tool. I have been having fun getting palettes from my camping photos. camping photos
What a fun use for the tool! π I love the palettes you created. π
I’m loving the roll out of v2.1 My Kona stash will certainly be growing as I play with this. Congrats on all your hard work, it’s made fun stuff for us.
My kona stash has already grown in testing this!! lol Hopefully I can figure out a nice way to save the Kona information soon! π
Geeky science question. Do you ever do controlled experiments to test how accurate the Kona matching is? Meaning, do you set out a bunch of Kona’s and take picture of them and then test to see if the matching is accurate? How accurate is it depending on the lighting? The researcher in me has to know.
Also I love options. MORE options. But seriously, saving the colors not so important to me. Rearranging the colors is about a 7.
Hahaah we didn’t do anything nearly that cool for testing. We used the scans that the Kona people gave us. I can tell you that not all of them match my Kona card, but I’m not sure if that’s lighting, dye lot, or what. Lighting makes a huge difference, as you can imagine!
Thanks for the feedback on the importance of different features!
Yes, I definitely want to print and save that Kona list and being able to reorder it would also be hugely helpful. Do you think that if I put a picture of my printed fabric in it would give me the matching Konas? I am going to play with the new palette builder this month a lot, thank you for the updates.
Thanks for the feedback on features! π If you upload a fabric photo it should match it to Konas for you! It may not be as accurate as going into the store or doing it yourself, but it will definitely get you started. π I’ve been using it for that, myself. π
Just discovered this today via the slightlyoffquilter blog. This tool looks like it has amazing potential – thanks so much for your work on it!
Yay, another Anne-with-an-e! π Thanks so much for stopping by and for the kind words! If you have any issues, please let me know!
yes, i think it would be great to have the CHOICE to save the Kona solid info with it – sometimes that would be your goal and the info you want to see if you are actually planning/ordering/etc, but sometimes your goal is just inspiration and a pretty pic with its pretty colors pulled out to gaze at (: also i think the ability to reorder the palette would be pretty valuable, as you know how much colors change when placed next to different colors, so it will look different in different orders, and some people might already have a plan as to which colors would be placed next to each other in an actual quilt, and that way you can see your actual plan in place. also the order itself would present different inspiration, for example on ombre effect vs a scrappy effect. the more variety you can provide (within ability and reason), the more vast the ways that people will be able to and want to apply it and use it. i love this so much, you rock!! (:
I’m working on making the choice thing happen as we speak! Well, actually I’m responding to your comment as we speak.
Anyway, you know what I mean.
Re-ordering I’m brainstorming how to do it well. It will likely happen, but not for a while. π You bring up some really good points about why it should be included, though!
and i just thought of something else (: one thing that is super cool about this is that it teaches us about colors and what we are seeing or THINK we are seeing – i mean i am even an Interior Designer and am technically (somewhat) (: educated in color, but we all see things SOOOO differently, and we get a little….”know-y” in ways, for example 2 people can see an off white totally differently – one thinks it’s white, one thinks its eggshell or snow or a zillion other things….and turns out if you hold it to white and off-white, it might be peach! AND of course we all get hung up on names (like, oh i HATE peach, but you liked that “off white” before someone called it peach, didn’t ya?!) it’s like the big “aqua” & “teal” debate – i think this is kind of fun because maybe it will get us out of our simple minded ‘labeling’ and just start to appreciate colors for what they are (or even just for what we are seeing for ourselves what they look like to us) without the labels…like the fabric i just uploaded – so not “my” “typical” palette – but i love it, and it speaks to me – so Kona Khaki pops up, and i say “ICK”! but guess what, if i have an open mind, i am smart enough to say who cares about the labels and what is “in” and what others like, or even what i THINK I like – if i keep an open mind, i can explore and have fun and learn new things, and find combinations that i love that i would not normally do. i think it is why we look at others’ work sometimes and ooo and ahhh and say “wow, i would never have put that together!”, but we love it – it’s because ya, we never would put it together because we tend to cling to our definitions we like of ourselves – “i am a green and blue person!” – which is silly because being flexible and open is the only way to surprise ourselves, and create rich and unique things that we aren’t seeing over and over again. a little off topic, but i want you to know that this tool is really greater than you might even realize. so good job & thank you! (:
Hey I like Kona Khaki! π
Seeing color differently is what makes talking about color so difficult, but also intensely interesting! I’m so happy you’re using the tool to expand the way you see colors. π It wasn’t the original intent, but it’s something I really care about. So thank you so much for your comment, it means a lot. π
oh, emmer effer, i just left you the longest, greatest, funniest reply ever, and then wordpress told me to go back and fill in my name, and when i did, my entire reply was gone. enter a thousand cusswords here. ):
lol You are so awesome. π I’m sorry that it ate your message, though! Maybe it just wanted to keep it for itself. WordPress is greedy like that.
Thank you SO VERY much for this amazing tool! I got the bright idea to make quilted throw pillows (thinking HSTs or triangles) to match a painting and the rug in my living room. I had taken pictures of the two items so when I went to stores to shop for solid fabrics I could see what colors I needed. Last night I decided to order online and was trying to find a way to match the colors on the pictures. Some how after much searching I came across your website and your amazing tool to pick the colors from the photo. Yay!!! I have saved your link on Pinterest for the future and am excited to place an order for what I need today. Thank you again!
Thank you so much for your kind comments and I’m so happy that the palette builder was able to help you in at time of need. π I will make one caveat that depending on the lighting of the photos you took and the lighting of the photos of the fabric samples we were given, they may not match exactly. Unfortunately that’s just the nature of these things. Hopefully the fabric you receive will be a good match. That’s such a great use of the palette builder. π Please feel free to reach out to me and share photos of the pillows you made. I love seeing the projects people make using palette builder!
