YAY FRIDAY! It’s been a crazy week here, and I am really looking forward to getting back to sewing this weekend!
If you’re interested in learning more about Quilt Design A Day and the creative process (and are a member of the modern quilt guild), the webinar I gave on Wednesday is now available online. Free!
In the meantime, here’s another week full of designs.

Still playing with HSTs, although this has veered into more complicated territory. I like the shape it creates in the negative space, but I don’t really feel like I got this design where I wanted it.

It’s interesting how different everyones tastes are. I actually really love this design, in both the navy and lighter grey versions. I like that there’s all sorts of secondary stuff going on and it feels like a flower lattice. However, I know a lot of people really don’t care for this one. I’m going to make this one at some point and then you’ll all be believers! 😉

This design is inspired by the Modern Trellis design by Must Love Quilts. I loved the radial symmetry and the off-centered middle placement, and this was the design I came up with trying to capture those elements.

Going back to exploring half square triangles, but this time I wanted to play with them interacting with full squares. For the life of me, I can’t see anything but goombas from Super Mario Bros. from these things. Which is ridiculous because they’re not that similar.

Still more HST play. I had a lot of fun with the chevron/zig-zag/hst interplay in this one. It reminds me a bit of a snowy mountain scape. Which admittedly has nothing to do with the source image. So it goes!

My quilt, Totoro! When I saw the source image, the triangles and shape of the tap reminded me so much of Totoro that I had to make this quilt.

Back to playing with HSTs, and I was really working on minimalism with these designs. I enjoyed adding the 3D effect in the leftmost one, but I liked the tessellation of the other two and how the negative space shape was the same as the positive space shape. I think the orange and blue is my favorite of the three, it just feels very summery! (And usually aqua and orange designs use aqua as the base, it was fun to switch it up!)
That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend, and make sure to leave time to be creative!

I love the 3D frosted summer!!
Thank you! I almost didn’t post that version, and it seems to be a fan favorite! Just goes to show. ^_^
I like first two and I’m looking forward to see the real thing. I’m believer for this design already, lol. Also the 3D is something that catches my eye.
The first two will probably end up being reality in some form or another. 🙂 The 3D one would be pretty fast to put together, maybe I’ll make that the next time I need a pillow or mini-quilt!
7-3 is fantastic – you should write that one up as a pattern for sure. Or can I just figure out the math and do it for myself? Happy weekend!
It may end up a pattern at some point, but you’re welcome to figure out the math. If you make it, please send me a link or a photo, I’d love to see it!
I love the Iced Summer.
Thank you! I’m hoping that one will end up a reality at some point. 🙂 Now that summer is ending, I foresee a sharp increase in my productivity!
wow! I’m always blown away by your designs. Iced summer and the lighter version of Flora tone are my favorite from this batch.
Thank you! 😀 I think the lighter version of flora tone would make a super cute baby quilt!
Iced Summer…….yesssssssss. When I look back at the Design Seeds pix, I’m reminded of a jewelry design ad for ?? that shows a bracelet designed using the colors of the sea.
The Iced Summer one is likely to end up as a real design. 🙂 I’m not familiar with the advert you’re talking about, but I actually really liked that particular design seed photo, so I bet it’s pretty!
You’re killin’ me with 6.29 and 6.30 – ugh, they must be made into quilts. And I mean. Now.
I definitely have plans to make quite a few of these designs! For realsies this time. (Ah, the dangers of making designs FAR faster than I could ever possibly produce them.)
The flora tones are very pretty and to me, they just sing ‘classic quilt’! There’s something a bit traditional… maybe even historical feeling about them. And I agree, there are layers of complexity there too. Thanks again for the webinar, you were a pro and so many great things to consider.
Good eye! 😀 That design is definitely more traditional in flavor (that type of work is often referred to as “modern traditional” because we quilters love our oxymorons) than my other designs tend to be. 🙂 I’m so happy you got a chance to see the webinar! And that you got something out of it, I tried to keep it a bit general as I suppose we can’t all be quilters. ^_^
Once again, you just blow me away! I could say so many great things about these designs, though it’s “Iced Summer” that speaks to me. So simple, and yet so effective. You’ve really gotten this designing thing down to an art form. Wonderful stuff!
Thank you so much, Linda!! You’re so sweet. ^_^ I really love the minimalist designs, but I feel like I’ve also sort of gotten into a bit of a rut. Time to shake things up a bit, although I’m not sure what direction to head next. Time to inspiration hunt!
i was finally able to listen to your webinar tonight (couldn’t listen live) – you sounded great – very relaxed and organized – i think your best point was that we should all remember that we all have creativity within us and that it is the USING & cultivating it that is important – so true. i think we tend to whine that we aren’t creative and act like it is something others just ‘have’ – because we are afraid of both failure and success (both of which are irrelevant – creating is creating) and also because we are lazy. we don’t want to admit that others’ artistic talents are born out of commitment, time, practice, hard work. and you are right that even 5/10/15 minutes are more than zero and they add up. quite simply there is not excuse to not be a creative person, it just takes doing it! anyway, good talk, you sounded great! another thing off the ‘to do’ list and on the ‘done’ list!
Yay, I’m so glad you got to listen to it and that you enjoyed it! 😀
Being creative is definitely a choice one needs to make. “is it important enough to me to do even when I’m tired?” but once you’ve made the choice enough times (since it’s a choice you have to make every day) it just becomes ingrained into you. I don’t even think about it now. I’m on vacation, I QDAD. I don’t have my computer, I still QDAD. It makes me wonder if I should apply the same sort of thing to other parts of my life. 🙂 Like y’know, exercise.
