It’s Sew, Mama, Sew Giveaway Day/Week again!
To everyone who is new, welcome! My name is Anne, and I really love color. I have started a color tutorial series, and I also helped create an online tool called Palette Builder which will help you find a color palette from your photos. I’ve also started a Quilt Design A Day challenge, which has been a lot of fun.
This year we’re giving away a fat quarter bundle of one color way of Anna Maria Horner’s new line, Pretty Potent. The fabric will be shipped from Julie @ Intrepid Thread.
I know you all have a lot of stops to make, so I’ll make this fast.
To enter, simply leave a comment telling me whether you use quilt patterns or not, and why or why not. Maybe you don’t use them because there aren’t any you like? Or you only use the ones with complicated math? Or you love patterns because you don’t want to draft your own designs. Lemme know!
If you are a follower of the blog (new or old) through rss, email, or bloglovin’, please leave a second comment letting me know you follow me for a second chance to win.
Here’s a few photos of some of the work I’ve done this past year. If you like it, go ahead and follow!
Giveaway ends Friday, May 16th at 5pm PST. I will post the winner by Monday, May 19th.
Good luck everyone!

Not sure if your giveaway is international but I’d like to answer your question. It depends. I like to make my own twist to quilt patterns to claim it my own 🙂 but from time to time it’s good to just follow directions and take it easy.
I don’t really use patterns, I have trouble finding ones that I like. I tend to find patterns that I like parts of and then change the other parts to work for me.
I follow on bloglovin (ebcallender).
I use quilt patterns sometimes, but usually once I make one I “tweak it” the next time!
I do use patterns sometimes I modify them
I think your dragons quilt will always be my favorite. I follow patterns especially when I just want to do something quick and easy.
I use patterns when it seems difficult to figure out on my own or there are irregular shapes or paper piecing that I would need to draft.
I do use quilt patterns, but I am I the beginning stages of writing my own! Yay!
I do like to use patterns, as long as the fabric cutting directions are not too complicated! I love love your dinosaur quilt 🙂
I follow on Bloglovin!
It depends on my mood I guess. If I see something I really like, then I will. Usually I’ll combine patterns and mish mash things.
Already following via BL
I do follow quilt patterns but will tweak to resize them if it doesn’t bend my brain too much. I do like to do my own thing too but feel much more confident following a pattern
I follow via bloglovin
I do both! And usually find that when i’m not using a pattern it all goes to pot and spends entirely too long on my design wall! There’s something to be said about a bit more pre-planning before cutting into your fabrics i guess 😉
Bloglovin follower as well! Thanks for the chance!
I’m a following
Not very often I use a pattern but if I really like the quilt and want to save time figuring fabric and construction I’ll by it. Has to be special though.
I do use patterns occasionally. I appreciate a time saving construction technique too!
I follow you via email AND Bloglovin – don’t want to miss a post!
I’m still a new quilter so I do use patterns or tutorials, and have done a couple of quilt alongs. I also do just basic charm pack and nine-patch a lot too. Thanks for the giveaway!
I like using patterns but I do choose my own colorways.
I follow via bloglovin.
I do like some quilt patterns…and I do like making up my own, just depends what I want out of the quilt, if I had some vision or if I just want something easy, I guess.
I follow you via feedly.
Just began following you play-crafts love your style.
I usually design my own quilt patterns. I love your collection of quilts here 🙂
I am definitely a follow – thanks for the giveaway 🙂
Depends on if I feel like doing math or not….

I don’t use quilt patterns — I may use traditional blocks occasionally, but I tweak them. thanks for the chance.
And I follow with BL.
I have used patterns as launching points but usually change them to suit my needs. Thanks for the lovely giveaway.
I sometimes use patterns but also enjoy designing small quilts and wall hangings for me or family. I am enjoying your color series. Thanks for the giveaway.
Definitely some of both! Some days I don’t want to figure things out for myself, and then I use a pattern.
I don’t use quilt patterns. I find them too restrictive.
I’m following you on Bloglovin
I sometimes use patterns, sometime not. I love that patterns makes things easier and less wastage. Thanks fort he lovely giveaway
I do use patterns but then…I like to change a little something to make it more me. 🙂
Most of the time I do not follow patterns. If I am inspired by a design I tend to change it around to suit my
I use patterns but change them up…your work is beautiful love the Harper bunnies and dragons.
I don’t use quilt patterns… I like getting inspired by something myself
i actually don’t use patterns – because i just like to sew things together improv, or just create simple patterns…but i might get to one of yours someday (: and…love AMH Pretty Potent – right up my alley – especially the Echinacea/Coneflowers and the Thistles – Pretty PRETTY! (:
I do use patterns, especially for more complex quilts like medaillon quilts. Thanks!
and i follow your blog via….email?! thank goodness these are posting today – i have THREE FEET OF SNOW TODAY!!!
I like patterns because I’m super new to quilting and I still make a LOT of cutting/measuring errors and even the simple projects are time consuming to fix my measuring mistakes! I would be lost without the pattern! Thanks for the chance!
I also follow via bloglovin!
I use quilt patterns because I’m still relatively new to quilting, so I’m not confident enough yet to venture out on my own design. But hopefully one day I will. Thanks for the giveaway!
I like patterns because I’m new to quilting and don’t quite know what I’m doing half the time. I think after I’ve been doing this awhile I won’t use patterns as often. However there are so many people more creative than me that I think I will alway find a pattern that I will want to try.
I follow you on bloglovin
I very rarely use quilt patterns. The only time I do is when it involves really complicated math or complicated piecing. For instance, I’m working on a Gypsy Wife quilt right now, but I’m also working on a medallion quilt I’ve designed myself. It just depends, I guess. When I do use a pattern, it has to be for a quilt top I really, really love. 🙂
I would say my pattern vs make it up ration is about half and half. Depends on the complexity of the pattern, and if one exists. Sometimes I’ll see something and want to make it whether or not there is a pattern.
Thanks for the giveaway!
I just started following via Feedly.
I’ve got a love/hate relationship with patterns. Some of my favorite quilts that I’ve made based on a pattern that I gave my own spin to and others developed on their own inspired by things I’ve seen.
I’m a Bloglovin follower
Yes – I do use quilt patterns. There are so many great options out there for modern quilters now. The quilting world is very inspiring.
I do use quilt patterns. When I see one I love, I can’t resist. But along the way, I usually give it a twist of some sort to reflect my own personality, rather than making an exact duplicate of the original quilt.
I follow you on bloglovin.
Patterns, schmatterns–I’d rather re-invent the wheel. Loving those botanicals.
Oh, yes, email.
There are so many free patterns out there, it would need to be a really unique pattern for me to buy one!
I started following you
I have sewn almost everything but quilts! I probably don’t buy the patterns because it seems easy enough to figure out on my own. But maybe the tips and tricks would be worth the cost of the pattern.
these are so pretty. I do use patterns, but I also like not using them from time to time. Sometimes I don’t want to follow directions.
I have used a couple of quilt patterns, but only ones from library books. I don’t like paying £6/7 for a pattern I’ll only use once. Besides I like maths and can work it out fairly easily myself usually.
I like to do my own drafting for quilts
I’m fairly new to quilting and so follow patterns. I feel competent to make some changes but for the most part, I stay with the plan. I’m not sure if I could make my own design but perhaps some time in the future I might find a wow fabric and try to do something with it. Those fabrics from Intrepid Thread just might do it. Thanks for hosting this giveaway. I subscribe to your newletter; I’m always interested in your posts.
To date I have not used a pattern…although I have every intention of doing so! It’s just when I get the pretty fabric in my hand, all sorts of beautiful quilt ideas fill my head and simply MUST be made, lol. Thanks for the chance to win!
I tend to follow a pattern, but will often drop a few blocks to make the quilt smaller and more manageable. Thanks for the chance
I love patterns because I am still not completely confident is my artistic abilities. Thanks for the giveaway!
I am new to quilting and am just learning the basics. Would love to improve enough to use a pattern, I especially like your bunny one.
I don’t usually use patterns because I prefer to design my own.
I follow via bloglovin. By the way, I LOVE that last quilt.
I follow through blog lovin (merroman)
Sometimes I’ll use a pattern, other times I won’t. Depends on how complicated the quilt it, if there’s easy access to a pattern, and how closely I need to estimate yardage.
I usually use a pattern or do improv. I would like to learn how to draft a design myself.
I have been sewing for more than 40 years but I have never made a quilt, therefore I have never used a quilt pattern 😉

I don’t really use patterns, just modern blocks for me. Thanks.
I don’t use patterns because there are too many beautiful ones to choose from. It’s overwhelming. So I just make it up as I go.
I love patterns, but I do tend to use them as a jumping off point to make my own designs.

I don’t use patterns as I don’t like following rules
I would say I use a pattern some times. If I love the design of the entire quilt. But often times I start with a block and then figure out a layout I like.

I don’t quilt but love looking at them for inspiration of color palettes because I love quilting fabric to make handbags.

I do use patterns as I’m a newbie quilter. having said that, the current quilt I’m piecing is being made up as I go along! Your bunny quilt is awesome!
I have never used a quilt pattern as I haven’t really found one that ticks all the boxes yet, still looking though 🙂
What a great giveaway!
I tend to buy, but not use, patterns…lol Of the patterns I purchase, there is some aspect I like about it, but prefer to modify them a bit so they’re more *me* — that said, I *love* your style and know there are a few patterns I’d buy and use!
I’ve only started one quilt, a cathedral quilt, so I haven’t really used any quilt patterns yet, but I’d like to.
I’ve been “following” you for a while (toolbar link!), but now it’s official — I signed up with bloglovin’
Thanks for hosting a great giveaway! I absolutely love your qdad series and cannot wait to see what you come up with each time!
I usually don’t follow a pattern, because I like simple patchwork projects, but sometimes I see one that I adore and so have some patterns that I may just have to try out someday! (Love your bunny quilt!)
I do use patterns. I love two block quilt patterns and by looking at the pattern I can see what I’m going to get.
just in case: m3reyna at gmail dot com
I do use quilt patterns, but I began writing my owns.
I like very much the Palette Builder. Actually, a few days ago I posted about it on my blog.
Of course, I am a blogvin follower of your blog.
as a beginner quilter right now i am using patterns
I follow your blog
Sorry! I am a “bloglovin” follower of you blog.
Yes I use quilt pattern! I either buy kits with pattern, or use free patterns that are available online!
I like using patterns or being inspired by other people’s designs but generally put my own twist on it somewhere along the line!
I follow your blog via feedly – thanks
I probably use patterns or tutorials about two thirds of the time. In many ways, I still feel like a beginner, and I appreciate having cutting directions and instructions. Thanks for the giveaway!
I tend to not use quilt patterns, partly because I usually tweak it anyway, so I figure if I’m going to do the math to tweak it, I may as well do it from scratch!
However, I’m also pretty straightforward in my quilting/sewing. I have a feeling that as I pick up more skills, I’ll be trying out more patterns so I can learn new things!
I have to use patterns since I’m so math-challenged! Sad. Your giveway = happy!!!
I usually design my own pattern but if I see a pattern I like, I usually buy it (mostly as a thanks to the designer)
I use patterns because I’m still a beginner and its easier when the measuring is done for you. Thanks!!
I follow you with bloglovin!
I just followed you on Bloglovin’. I LOVE the Quilt Design A day series!
I’d be a pattern follower for quilts. Infact, I have a few waiting but I have yet to tackle quilts as I often sew clothes. I love AMH and want a quilt on my bed featuring her pronts
I don’t really use quilt patterns. I usually just quilt off the cuff – improvisationally. But for clothes and bags, etc., I’m all over having a pattern!
Love your quilts! So pretty. I’m pretty much a pattern follower. 🙂
I do use patters, but I often make changes to them as I go along. Thanks for the great giveaway.
I’m following on Bloglovin’!
Ooh lovely AMH bundle! I do use patterns, but not all the time. I recently have almost finished my Farmers Wife quilt which was full of mini patterns and I also like to support pattern designers so I purchase them when I see one I like. But I like making up things as I go sometimes too! Cheers for the chance 🙂
I use patterns because they really help me with fabric requirements, but also because they help me do more things than just strips.
I follow you with bloglovin
Oh my gosh I LOVE the bunnies quilt! I’d like to follow that pattern! Usually I don’t follow patterns as I guess I am just to picky or something. I do like to create my own tho..using blocks or applique!

I love using quilt patterns because I hate the math involved in figuring out my own
I don’t use patterns often, but I do like to buy them to read how different quilts are put together – it’s like seeing the secret trick behind the scenes

I don’t usually follow the patterns. Making up something by my own is so much fun!
I follow you on Bloglovin’:)
I don’t do math. ha! I haven’t done much quilting, but most are actually ones that I did do the math for even though I usually dislike math!
I definitely follow patterns. I could do some things on my own (add the same blocks or same sized blocks together) but prefer following patterns. I have never trusted myself with math!
I follow you on Blog Lovin’.
I have never used a quilt pattern. I usually sketch my idea, figure out measurements, then play with colors and fabrics. The “figuring it out” part is such a fun part of the process for me.
Thank you for the chance. I love this AMH collection!
I use my own patterns if I can figure it out but if I can’t I buy the pattern (or I’m being lazy)

I sometimes use patterns or view tutorials on line. Have been doing more improvisational piecing of late.
Use books or patterns for making bags…
While I’m inspired by many patterns, I rarely use one.
I tend to follow patterns both from magazines and the internet
l don’t really use patterns. I like to just sketch something and figure it out on my own. There are only a handful of patterns that I’ve used and it’s usually just once.
I’ve made quilts without a pattern, but I find it’s much easier to have a pattern to follow.
It depends on the quilt. A lot of the time, I will use a pattern, but make small changes to it.
For the last five quilts I have not used a pattern and it has been so fun being involved in the whole process….for good or for bad….um, I mean learning experience 🙂

I use patterns because I haven’t worked up the courage to give my own designs a try yet!

I have used a few patterns. I keep mine pretty simple so I don’t usually need one.
I love using patterns, especially ones created for precuts! It lets me worry about the fun stuff like color and placement 🙂
I do use patterns. I would never be able to complete some of those beautiful quilts without a pattern, it would be a total disaster.
so far i have not used quilt patterns, i’m too free of a spirit
I follow you with Bloglovin! You have made some beautiful quilts!
I made one quilt and I just made it with all 5 inch blocks, like an eye spy one. So it wasn’t really from a pattern – just with free tutorials online. I have seenanother one I want to try – disappearing 9 patch, I think. So that’s kind of a pattern. I’d love to design my own, but I might mess up the math!
I use patterns because the measurements are already figured.
I have so many books and magazines I would think I would have all the patterns I possible need, but there is always something new to try, so I get all excited and get new patterns! I am not good at designing, but I can usually figure something from just a picture…so I do make up my own patterns sometimes.
Love that bundle! I follow patterns because I’m usually just too tired to think about math 😉

I am not really a pattern person, I am trying to use them more to learn traditional blocks but usually I get bored with the repetition and go my own way
I sometimes use quilt patterns if I ham having a hard time visualizing how something is put together, or I would have to do a lot of math. But even the, I tend to use them as jumping off points and always use my own color schemes.
Haven’t really used quilt patterns before, block patterns yeah, but only the paper-pieced ones, am sure I’m gonna try them someday though 🙂
Thanks for the chance to win these beauties! xx
I don’t because I don’t quilt! 🙂
I use patterns only when I can’t figure out the math myself. Sometimes it’s a challenge. 🙂

Hi, Anne, I never use quilt patterns, but I do like to use tutorials, including block tutorials. I guess I don’t use quilt patterns because I just let whimsy dictate my direction in a quilt. And I do simple stuff mostly. Thanks! Love this gorgeous bundle.
I follow you via Feedly. thank you again!
I like using quilt patterns! Designing is not my forte and I see what I like and then can do what I do best – pick out fabric and sew! thanks!
I am a bit of a Newbie so I mostly use simple patterns for beginners. But I also learn simple blocks that can be incorporated into a simple quilt. I am scared of complicated mathematical patterns 🙂
Thanks for a great giveaway!

I don’t usually follow patterns very closely, I just use them as inspiration for what I end up making.

It really depends on whether I use patterns or not. I don’t normally, but if I find one that just calls to me because it isn’t a style I’d thought of before, I’ll use it.
I definitely use patterns. But I’ve definitely branched out on my own too!

I haven’t followed a quilt pattern yet. The thing is, I get a vision of the how I want the finished quilt to look and most of the time there is no pattern to match it so I have to do some shoddy math myself 🙂
I don’t generally purchase a pattern but I do follow magazine and book patterns. Mostly I use the tutorials on line. They have pretty much all I want. Thanks.
I quilt using patterns 99.9% of the time. I’m too lazy to figure out the math on my own usually!
Great giveaway! I sometimes use patterns and other times get ideas from a pattern I have seen. Just depends!

I use (quilt or other) patterns when I can’t or don’t want to figure out the math, when I can’t figure out how to do a specific technique, or when I want to make the project pretty much as designed and can’t figure out things like proportion measurements etc. If I find a completely new fun project that I fall in love with (like the rocket zipper bag I found recently) I don’t mind buying the pattern to encourage the designer to keep coming up with great projects!
I do not follow a quilt pattern.
I tend not to use them, as I have tons of ideas of my own. Thanks for the chance to win!
I prefer to follow a pattern, if one is easily available. Though I tend to look at a pic and just wing it! It is about convenience to me.
I love simple patterns because I am terrible at cutting out fabric, LOL.
I like them sometimes… Just depends on the mood and whether I think I need the pattern in order to execute the effect. Your blog is fantastic, Anne!

I have never made a quilt yet, but I think I would like to use a quilt pattern when I do!
I use quilt patterns all the time. It is easier to use patterns that try and design one yourself. You can always use the quilt pattern and then change it around to fit your needs. Thank you for being a part of the Sew Mama Sew giveaway and giving all of us a chance to win the fat quarter bundle.

I just finished my first quilt, I haven’t attempted a quilt pattern yet but it is my next endeavor.
I’ve only made two quilts so far. One was a blog quilt-along I followed and one was a pattern on Craftsy. I liked the pattern, and I would make another one!
I do use quilt patterns because they make things easy, but my favourite quilts are the ones I put together using the fabric as inspiration.
I started quilting by using patterns, but now I like to add my own twist to things.
I’m a new follower on Bloglovin’. Your work is gorgeous.
I have not used patterns in the past. I just think about shapes I want and draw it out on graph paper, even quilts where I have used applique.

I am a new quilter and have only used one pattern so far to make a sewing machine cover with charm pack. I have am using my own pattern now to create 3 rag quilts for my grandkids.
I’ve not used a whole lot of quilt patterns as I’m one of those people who like to wing it! But for intricate patterns or things like paper piecing they are a must! Looking forward to seeing some of your quilt design a day designs in pattern form 🙂
I do both…use a preprinted pattern and design my own. I like designing my own the best!
And I follow on bloglovin and Instagram!
I look for ideas on the internet, I haven’t really used patterns yet

I like using patterns, mostly from books, but with quilts I also like making simple blocks or squares.
I just follow complicated patterns, the rest I just draw and measure by myself, thanks for the fabulous giveaway

I’m rubbish at following patterns, and love the process of creating one of my own
I follow with Bloglovin. xx
I use them all the time! There are so many beautiful and creative ideas around!
I like quilt patterns, though I don’t always use them. I LOVE your rabbit quilt!
I only do super easy ones that don’t require a pattern
I don’t tend to use patterns, although I think that’s because I’ve been focussing on making quilts for my family so I’ve been designing things for them specifically, that fit their style.
Although that being said, Fracture by Charlotte Newland and Feather Bed by Anna Maria Horner are both on my list to-do soon!
I use patterns mostly other than when I took a improv class with Denyse Schmidt which really was fun. Love your quilts!
Thanks for the lovely giveaway. I love using patterns
I have made just one quilt without a pattern – and it required an army of friends to help me get it designed the way I wanted. So, going forward, patterns are the way for me! How did your quilter finish the blue quilt you made for your dad?
I prefer to draft my own patterns, but if I see something really good where the maths is beyond me, I have been tempted to use a pattern 😉 Also I like patterns where it looks complicated but there’s a special trick to piecing it

I tend to see a picture I like and work it out for myself. I have used patterns in the past, like for the cubic puzzler quilt of which I’ve made two.
I use quilt pattern almost all the time, however I try to put my own little twist on it.
Already following you.:)
I always use patterns – I may modify them, but I always start with a pattern.
I’m a follower on bloglovin.
I sometimes use patterns as they are written, sometimes modify them, and sometimes design my own. One thing I love about quilting is that even when you use somebody else’s pattern you can make the quilt your own by your choice of fabrics.
I don’t usually use patterns. Sometimes I’ll pick a block that I like and make a quilt with that.
I’ve never bought a quilt pattern but have used a few free online tutorials. I’ve done one made up quilt -which turned out surprisingly ok!

I hardly ever follow a quilt pattern. I usually know how to make it by looking at it, or have no interest in making it. If I can’t figure out how to make it, if it is very complicated or if it makes a design that is clever, I would use a pattern.
I am a happy follower, I believe its through bloglovin
I normally just make up my own quilt patterns, 1/2 way through I wish I just followed a pattern.
I follow patterns. Thanks for the amazing giveaway and your tutorials.
I don’t use quilt patterns as in buy them. If I really like the design idea of a quilt I take elements of it and try to put my own spin on it but I don’t actually buy the pattern because it’s normally quite easy to work out how it was constructed. Probably not the answer you were hoping for!!

For me, patterns have to be basic beginner level as that’s where my skill is. I’ve only used one, but have had success with quilt alongs.

I’ve been following you on Bloglovin for awhile. Thanks for all the inspiration! I love your dinosaur quilt!

I love patterns because, frankly, I have a hard time picking out colors and the pattern usually helps!

Great question. I actually have never used a quilt pattern and have always felt hindered by them. I draw out my own patterns and go from there. I really should try a pattern sometime but I can never make myself do it.
you have had a very productive year. i love your top quilt! i dont typically follow patterns. when i sew i want very little stress…i mostly like just sewing fabric together and seeing wehre it takes me.
Thanks for the chance. I don’t use patterns as I make up all my own designs. More fun for me.
I am a beginner so I use patterns. Thanks for the chance to win.
I have been quilting for over 20 years and have used other’s patterns for the most part. I have had two quilts that I drafted out myself from seeing photos I could not find any patterns for anywhere. They did come together nicely, and made the look of the quilt I was trying to achieve. I am just not comfortable enough to do much of the drafting so I stick to well made patterns. Thanks for the giveaway.
I follow along with your blog on Bloglovin. I love your rabbit quilt. It’s too cute.
To use a pattern or not. I do and don’t. Sometimes i see something I like and put it together with other things for something unique. Thanks for the chance to win.
I use patterns because I don’t want to have to do the math. Just my own laziness!

i like to use patterns but tend to tweak them a little – making more blocks or using different methods to get the same effects. i don’t always draft my own, but i try to buy patterns i know i’ll make at some point.

I do follow patterns… for the block.. then I put them together in my own way. trying to design some of my own..

I use them on occasion. I like to buy them and books, but generally I end up making my own. I am trying to complete more projects from books I have bought instead of just looking at the pretty pictures and dreaming about all the time I wish I had.

I use patterns – why wouldn’t I when someone has done all the hard work!!

I know it’s not the best practice, but I usually just find a picture of the quilt I want to create and figure out a pattern on my own. I only do things for personal use, or gifts.
I guess I’m a combination of both. I start out with a vague idea and a pattern and wing it from there. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t!
I don’t use quilt patterns because I don’t really quilt much…I prefer to sew other stuff. (Some of which I use patterns for, some I just “wing it”.

I don’t use patterns— I like quilting to be relaxing and math isn’t relaxing (too me). I also like being creative and seeing what I can come up with on my own– sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s trash but it is always fun.
Great fabrics!!!
Your quilts are also fabulous!! Love the Bunnies!!
I use patterns but tend to change them up a bit 🙂
I tend to design my own quilts based on the fabric and/or purpose of the quilt. Love your bunny quilt! Thanks for the chance to win!
I sometimes use patterns – I like them because I am terrible at quilt math, and other people are way more creative than I am!
Yes, I start out with patterns, but sometimes improvise with them, or not!
I’d say I’m about half and half.. I do like a pattern for anything complicated, and I sure can’t say my ideas are anywhere near as inspired as some of the amazing things I see daily online.
I love looking at the patterns, but I’ve only ever followed one. Just looking at quilts, gives me ideas and inspiration.
I sure do use quilt patterns or else I’d be making just Turning Twenty quilts! I love quilt patterns for the yardage is all figured out.
I started following you via email. New to your blog!

For some reason (masochism? Lol) I like to do the math myself, so I haven’t used a pattern yet. I’m not opposed to the idea someday though 🙂
I have made a couple of quilts without patterns but sometimes it’s nice to use someone else’s calculations. LOL
I am currently using a quilt pattern for a simple string quilt. I admit though, I am going to modify it a bit. I do like to have patterns as a basis and then let my own creativity and dreams for the final outcome take over to make it my own.
I personally like to do both….improv for some and for others, use a pattern. Patterns are great for using new techniques for sure:) Thanks for a great giveaway as I’m a huge AMH fan!!! Crossing my fingers and toes:) jodym7atyahoo.com
I tend not to use patterns and create my own.

I do use patterns but…….sometimes it’s such a drag when the patterns make flying geese and half square triangles some ridiculous, tedious method. Why not just say how many you need and suggest the method that the yardage was based on. I hate making 900 HSTs and having to trim up that many

Hi Anne! I don’t really follow patterns much, because I mostly just like to sketch things out on graph paper and get to it 🙂 But I love reading quilting books for inspiration. Also, I don’t love making quilts that are made up of loads of the same block – I find it kinda boring 😉 Thanks for the giveaway!

I definitely use patterns. I like the challenge of figuring a design out but sometimes it seems too complicated or time consuming so I will purchase a pattern.

I don’t use patterns. After glancing at a finished quilt I can tell how it was made. If I really like a design I let it roll around in my head for a while and end up designing something similar, but I always end up changing it as I go. Patterns are just too constraining.

Anne, your work is fabulous. Too answer your question, I do use quilt patterns, but not always. I don’t see any sense in re-inventing the wheel – or the block, if you know what I mean. Sometimes it is nice to just do my own thing; other times, I use patterns for the super-easy and super-complicated quilts I want to make. Sometimes, I just sit down and sew.
