I got some spare moments to sit down and work with the water bundle by Oakshott which I received as a prize from Lily’s Quilts. Improv curves look tricky but come together so quickly, I had this done in no time. (It also helps that this is a mini-quilt!)
I’m working on a tutorial to go along with it in case you want to try some improv curves as well! I need to finish the quilting before I can finish the tutorial, though.
This is the spiritual successor to a previous Oakshott quilt I made, inspired by the Antelope Canyons in Arizona. With this water bundle, I was more inspired by the Bay Area and Northern California, with it’s rolling hills, lakes and ocean views.
I continue to love working with Oakshotts. They aren’t as thin as other shot cotton I’ve worked with, and the colors are truly lustrous.
Next up: figuring out the quilting!

Holy beautiful. This is just ethereal goodness! Can’t wait to see how this lovely comes together 😉 What size is the top?
Thank you! It’s actually really tiny (as is the other one I linked to) since it’s from a fat eighth pack. It should end up being about 2′ long. I forget the width, somewhere between 12 and 18″. But it means that the quilting will go super fast! 😀
It is beautiful, they are pretty colours.
Thank you! I usually tend towards more aquas and limes, so it was a fun challenge to push myself into the bluer end of the spectrum! Of course, having it come as a bundle sure made it easy.
love the texture on these. I want to see this tutorial.
When it’s done, it’ll be posted on Lily’s Quilts, but I’ll be sure to post a link!
It is way easier than you’d expect, and incredibly forgiving!
I love it – definitely makes me want to go out and buy some straight away!!
I wish I owned more!! They’re still pretty hard/expensive to get in the US, but like Liberty, it’s worth it. 🙂
Oh wow! That is truly lovely. I may need to try my hand at some improv curves. I did a couple of improv circles blocks that turned into an improv circles tote, but I like the relaxed look of your curves so much, and the colors are to die for. Beautiful. I think I’d quilt this in wavy lines just to complement the improv curves.
I love improv curves, and they’re so much easier than they look! Because the curves aren’t as tight as a circle (or half/quarter circle) they’re incredibly forgiving. I think you might be right about the wavy line quilting. I may go see if I can find some blue/green variegated thread.
wow wow wow WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
<3 Thank you!! Maybe I should follow your lead and just hand quilt it. :) (just)
Yes I need a tutorial! Beautiful.
I’ll be posting the tutorial on Lily’s Quilts, but I will definitely post a link here when it goes live! They’re truly more simple than they look and super forgiving. And like FMQing, best when you’re relaxed so they go great with a glass of wine. 🙂
oh goody. I love improve curves but they scare me. i’m not good at curves and I know I just need to practice but i’m impatient 🙂
Because these curves are so shallow, they’re the best thing to practice with because they’re really forgiving. Once you get to quarter-circle or half-circle territory (like mod pop or drunkard’s path), it becomes a little more challenging. It’s also SUPER FAST because you don’t need a ruler to make the cuts. Cut, sew, iron, done. It took me probably a bit over an hour to make the top (which admittedly is small) and that was only because I was taking pictures for the tutorial. All that is to say, you can totally do it!! Plus it’s like FMQing, it works better when you’re relaxed, so is great with a glass of wine. 😀
That is beautiful! Blues and greens just happen to be my favorite colors. 🙂
I would love to see a tutorial on improv curves! Looking forward to it!

Thank you so much! The colors shown are what come in the fat eighth bundle I received, and they work so nicely together! I love how the colors are so nature-inspired.
So serene.
It’s funny you say that, because when I was making it, I was feeling anything BUT serene. However, when I look at it, it’s the mental state I wish I was in. 🙂 So maybe that’s how it works sometimes!
So pretty! I’m excited by the quilting possibilities on this one, and can hardly wait to see what you do!
Thank you! If you have any suggestions… quilting is definitely my weak spot when it comes to making quilts. 🙂 I’m not very good at seeing the possibilities. Left to my own devices, I will probably do wavy lines similar to the piecing, but not following the curves of the piecing, if that makes sense.
Absolutely beautiful!!! What more can I say?!
Thank you!! This was definitely one of those things that I had a good idea of what I wanted it to look like when it was done. And… it looks NOTHING like that. lol On the other hand, I actually like the end product a lot better than what was in my head. 🙂
Oh, i love this… it’s just so calm.
I’ve been wanting to pick up some Oakshotts, i might just need to limit the colours to these lovelies!
Thank you. Good luck choosing colors if you pick up some Oakshotts! There’s so much gorgeousness!! Although this does come as a nice pre-cut bundle which makes it a bit easier. 🙂
