Traveling, Again 16

This is the year of travel, and another trip is coming up. I’m headed to the Foundations of Digital Games conference (yah, academics know how to even make games sound boring) and won’t be back until next week.

I’m not going to have access to wireless or even cell phone coverage, so I won’t be able to respond to emails until I get back. Β Yes, I realize the irony of having an academic conference full of a bunch of computer people in a location that has neither wireless nor cell phone coverage.

Don’t feel too badly for us poor geeky types, though. Because we’re going to be on this boat and hanging out in Cozumel.

Yah, somehow I’ll get over the lack of connectivity.

See you next week!

There’s always so much going on, I doubt I was really missed, but I appreciate the sentiment anyway! <3 I did have fun, though! πŸ˜€

OOOHHHHHH, COZUMEL!!!! if you have time, go to CHANKUNAB (or something like that) it is a ‘state park’ which in mexico, of course, means a fabulous sandy, sunny warm beach, but also means i think maybe like the 2nd largest in the world living reef or something – the snorkeling RIGHT OFF that beach is like a crazy Jacques Cousteau documentary!!! omg i am so jealous of mexico, i loooooove mexico!!!! try not to actually work too hard and be smart and lay around with the lizards!!!!!! and drink at least 14 margaritas for me (2 per day). have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hahahahaah funny enough, that’s exactly where we went. πŸ™‚ It was fairly touristy but the snorkeling was amazing! I saw a school/shoal/squad of Caribbean Reef Squid which was possibly one of the coolest things I’ve seen snorkeling! We were only at Cozumel for 6 hours or so, the rest of the time we were at sea. It was still pretty fabulous!

The water is AMAZING there. I’ve been snorkeling a lot in Hawaii and I think it was even clearer/more beautiful in Cozumel. πŸ™‚ Pretty amazing stuff. I’d love to go back and snorkel some more. My snorkel partner ended up having a reaction to something on her mask so we couldn’t stay out too long (and I don’t really like snorkeling alone). Maybe next time!

Did you miss me?! ^_^ I did have a great time! Other than the snorkeling I did none of the many things I said I would do (like relax) but it was still a memorable and fun experience. πŸ™‚

I was surprised at how quickly I got used to not being able to use my phone for anything other than a camera. And doubly surprised at JUST how quickly the consta-checking came back as soon as there was reception again. Yikes!! There must be some middle ground somewhere.

I did my best. πŸ˜‰ I did manage to do my quilt design a day every day although most were done at 2am lol (well except the day we returned and I was basically traveling between 7am EDT and midnight PDT. So. Tired. And nothing had a charge left to do it in the airport.)

I admit, some of the research in games can be kinda boring, too. πŸ™‚ But I suppose not to the people who are interested in those particular subjects! Overall the conference was great, and I enjoyed the lack of internet. I found myself more engaged in discussions because I didn’t have the crutch of staring at my phone constantly.

So true!! Occasionally I leave the phone behind or turned off for that exact reason! Glad you had a great time at the conference. That topic sounds very fascinating πŸ™‚

Oooh you’re smart! The trip definitely opened my eyes at how tethered I normally am to my phone and social media. It leads to a weird frothy/frantic feeling in my head and it’s hard to escape and get work done!
