We’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the business plan, in part because of the competition, but also because it’s a good way to think about our goals. And the best way to stay true to your business, I think, is to stay focused on those goals.
As we started telling people about our idea, one of the questions we got was “What’s your exit strategy?” We didn’t really have an answer for that.
At first that felt kind of lame to say we didn’t have one, because it seemed to suggest that we hadn’t thought it through, or that we hadn’t made plans for the future, or something. But as I thought about it further I realized that we don’t have an exit strategy because we’re not focused on it. That’s not one of our core goals.
Our core goals are: Build something really cool, which we want for ourselves; and, be able to support ourselves while doing that. Whatever exit may come will take care of itself if we have a great product and a healthy business!
So we asked ourselves, who do we want to be? What do we want to do every day? What sort of company do we want to build? And that’s what keeps us focused every day.
