WIP Wednesday
The end of the month is coming upon us quickly, and I have three things that need to be done by then, so they’ve gotten most of my attention.
Finished
Friends + Fabric Bee - I have finished my January blocks! This month, we were asked to make low volume wonky cross blocks, with either one or four crosses. I really enjoyed how quickly these came together!
Progress
Madrona Road Quilt - I basted this last week, but took a while to quilt it. I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do, but finally went with a simple echo stitch. I couldn’t decide how dense I wanted the quilting, so I quilted one area super dense but ended up not liking it, so did the rest less dense. I’m not totally happy with it but I don’t know how to fix it, and given the lack of time, I will probably just bind it and call it done. Maybe some day when I’m a better quilter I will re-visit it. I used a light blue Aurifil in 40 wt which was lovely to work with.

Sew, Sew Modern Swap - I finished up my small item tonight! I made a journal cover using a row of fussy cut hexies. The inside flaps are panels of text print. I’m really pleased with how it came out, it’s a lot of fun. And the journal is full of grid paper, perfect for quilt sketches! Hopefully my partner will like it. Now to finish the pillow, and this one will be done! I used the Stitched in Color journal cover tutorial for this.
Handstitched Class - I still haven’t started on my modern medallion quilt center, but I did finish the needlebook project. The front was supposed to be a flower, but I miscalculated how much smaller the design would be when I cut out the reverse applique, so instead it is my demon chicken needlebook. I want to make another one now, although I do love my demon chicken!
No Progress
Tote Swap - Not due til March, but I’ve actually started thinking about it!
April & Kerry’s Quilt - Cutting out the pieces for this quilt is going to be my February goal in A Lovely Year of Finishes.
A quilt for me - No free time yet.
NuBees Quilt - I am borrowing an extension table, so I can finally get some FMQ practice, and I want to practice on this quilt.
Skill Builder BOM - Maybe this weekend I will be able to get to these!
Linking up to the WIP Wednesday link party hosted by Lee at Freshly Pieced. Definitely take a look at the great projects people are working on!

LOVE all your projects Anne. Your journal cover is great, and I really love the demon chicken needlebook. Looking forward to seeing the Madrona Road quilt. I have a philosophy on things like that – I don’t stress too much about things not being absolutely perfect – I figure it is a record of my current skills (of course, if something is absolutely terrible, I will rip it out and fix it!).
You’re always so sweet! Thank you! And you’re right, I don’t know why this is stressing me out so much. I guess because it’s a “challenge” piece instead of a “for fun” piece. But if the challenges aren’t fun, why am I doing them?! In the end I’m pretty happy with it, I think. I just need to see it with the binding on.
Love the hexi project. It turned out great. But all of your projects all way look spectacular.

Awww, thank you!! It was interesting trying to figure out how to piece in the hexies instead of applique them. (I wanted to piece them so it wouldn’t be too bulky) but I’m happy with how it ended up.
Your journal cover is perfect! Thanks for the link.
Thanks so much! The tutorial is really straightforward and easy to follow.
The journal cover turned out great!
Thank you! Hopefully my partner ends up liking it as well!
Love that journal cover. With the FMQ just be fearless and go with the flow…rock on.
You’re right, as always. I think the problem is I don’t exactly know how to achieve what I want. I’m happy enough with what I have, but I am so taking on FMQing this year!!
I love your hexagons book cover! Very elegant!
Thank you! It was interesting trying to figure out how I wanted the design to go, but I’m pleased with how it ended up in the end.
Ha! I love the demon chicken needle book!! And your hexy journal cover is beautiful!
Haha thank you! We had chickens growing up, so I actually like the way it ended up because it reminds me of some funny stories.
I’m glad the hexy journal is done, figuring out where that design was going to go has been plaguing me for a while!
I love your hexi book cover, it’s gorgeous
Thank you!
It was an interesting process figuring out how to piece in the strip instead of applique it, but it worked first try!
Lovely projects all around but I especially love the journal cover. Great combo of cutesy prints and text!
Thank you!
My swap partner is a huge Heather Ross fan and text print fan, so it was really driven by her wishes.
all so beautiful! i’d love to see the whole quilted madrona road quilt. i have it as my pinterest quilt board cover picture:)
Awww that’s so awesome!! I’m super flattered!!
I’m waiting to get the binding on (hoping to do that tonight) before taking the full picture. Mostly because it’s cold outside and so I haven’t been highly motivated to get outside more than I have to for picture takin’.
Beautiful work! The journal cover is just stunning in the jewel colors with the black text border.
Thank you!
My swap partner really likes Heather ross, and the other fabrics are pulled from the other item I made for her.
Love your hexi journal cover!
Thank you! Hopefully my swap partner likes it, too!
You always have such beautiful projects – and I’m sure Madrona road is beautiful! Have you posted a picture of it in full yet? (I’m following now so I don’t miss things!)
You’re so sweet, thank you!! I wanted to wait until I had the binding on to post the full pictures. But I finished last night and just posted the whole thing! Thanks so much for following!!
Your projects are totally cute. I love that journal cover too – great layout for those hexies!
Thank you! It was fun figuring out how to piece them in instead of applique, but it was worth it, I think!
I love that journal cover! Very effective use of hexies
I’m doing the curves class and enjoying it. How are you finding the handstitching class?
Thank you!
Oooh I’m jealous of your curves class. I wanted to take it as well! The hand-stitching class is great, although all the projects take a lot longer than I expect. Go figure.
