The end of the month is approaching rapidly, and somehow I’ve managed to get all my January deadlines met!
Finished
Madrona Road Challenge Quilt – Finished this, and I made a fairly thorough post about how the design process went for it.
Sew Sew Modern Swap – More pictures available at the blog post here. Shipped it out this morning! I get impatient at this step. I wish the mail was more instant gratification!
In Progress
Handstitched Class – I’ve finished the first assignment for my Handstitched class, which is the dogwood blossom center + handstitching around it, and the three borders. My muse is rather sadistic and I had the idea to line up the two prints in the center. Because it was handstitched, it was actually a lot more forgiving than it would have been with the machine! This week we’re embroidering the white larger border, so I’ve picked out the colors for that.
Skill Builder BOM – For the Skill Builder Block of the Month, I’ve gotten the two January blocks done. I am using rainbow shot cottons with low volume prints. For the blocks that use fewer colors I’m doing a warm or cool split of the colors. It uses quilt as you go, so I need to add borders to these blocks, but I can’t decide if I’m going to do more low volume prints as the border or stick to neutral solids. Any opinions?
No Progress:
Basically anything that wasn’t due this month didn’t get done.
April & Kerry’s Quilt – Cutting out all the pieces is one of my goals for February.
Tote Swap – Will probably get to this after QuiltCon! (OMG QUILTCON)
A Quilt for Me – Maybe in March?
NuBees Quilt – This may end up being my February Lovely Year of Finishes goal so I’ll stop putting it off.
Linking up to the WIP Wednesday link party hosted by Lee @ Freshly Pieced! I love looking at all the great projects people are working on.

Can’t wait to see your handstitched block with the embroidery- looks lovely!
Thank you! I’m a little worried that the embroidery pattern doesn’t really go with the fabrics I picked, but I’m sure it’ll work out in the end. 🙂 Right now I’m a little intimidated by all the marking that needs to get done first, but I should really get over that!
Lord knows I’m a sucker for a rainbow. Such a great idea partnering simple basics with more textural low volume prints! I’d go for neutral solids as a border… even the photo you’ve posted looks nice with that “grey” background acting as a border. Perhaps a bit darker, or even a grey ombre!
Oooh, an ombre would be super fun! Someone on flickr mentioned that I should decide if I want the blocks to look framed or to float, so I think I’m going to play around a bit with fabrics and see what I like. 🙂
I went with rainbow because I figured it was the only color scheme I would be sick of after a year! lol
I love that rainbow block. Grey would set it off nicely.
Thank you! I hadn’t even considered greys, I will definitely have to play around some! 🙂
Your medallion looks great. And your floss colours are perfect.
I want that BOM. It’s amazing. It didn’t even occur to me to go rainbow and it looks amazing. Especially in the shot cotton. And the texts fabric! Love! I’d want to add more low volume texty type material to border, just because I love it, but I also agree with the previous commenters who said a nice creamy grey neutral would be lovely.

Thank you! I am so addicted to shot cotton. And now Hawthorne Threads carries it, which is just scary. I was thinking maybe if I just started collecting one color per month it’d be okay? lol
I need to figure out if I want the blocks to float or to be framed. I’ll have to play with fabrics. Heavens knows I will use a text print whenever possible! 😉
I love the rainbow sound wave block.
Thank you! It’s a really fun BOM club. 🙂
Great blocks for the Skill Builder BOM! Love your colors.
The Madrona quilt is just magnificent!!!
Thank you! I went with rainbow because I figured it was the only color scheme I wouldn’t be sick of in a year. lol
I’m so pleased you like the madrona road quilt! It was such a challenge to get it done, I’m a little sick of it, but I think with some space I’ll be happier with it. 😉
I know it sounds like an echo in here, but I just love your rainbow Sound Wave block – those solids are SO saturated! 🙂
Shot cottons are so fun that way! They’re one of my favorites these days. 😀 Thanks so much, it’s always so nice when the finished product matched the vision you had in your head!
You are busy. I love it all. Great job.
Thank you! I’m fortunate in that I have the ability to sew every night. It makes it easy to get quite a bit done!
I love that rainbow block. So striking.
Thank you! It’s always so gratifying when the actual block matches what it looked like in your head! 😀
Skill builder blocks are purdy. Maybe use a cream for the border?
I have a bunch of creams and tans I was thinking of using for the border initially. I think I’ll definitely have to play with those and see if I like the way it looks. 🙂 It’s always this small stuff that ends up halting my progress for ages!
I blogged about my skill builder block last week! Love the look of yours. And that pillow is amazing!
Thank you!! I love the colors you used in yours! That blue background is so gorgeous. You’re going to have a really vibrant and beautiful quilt when you’re done!
I LOVE your sound wave block. The neutrals look amazing and really set off your color scheme. Absolutely stunning!
Thank you so much! I went with this color scheme because I figured it was the only one I wouldn’t be sick of after working on it for a full year. lol I keep seeing it used on flickr and decided to give it a try!
LOVE your use of color in those skill builder blocks!
Thank you!! When picking I figured I needed to come up with a color scheme I would still like a year from now when the BOM finishes. lol When you’re as fickle as I am, that’s harder than you would think!
I’m doing the Skill Builder too! I love your blocks very much–what a neat idea to use the prints as the background! And I think this quilt is going to look amazing in rainbow colors.
Ooooh your blocks are incredible!! I love the color scheme and your solids look so graphic! I tried to choose a color scheme and was worried anything I chose I’d be sick of in a year, so I went with rainbow! hahaha
I love the rainbows!!!!

Thank you! It was the only color scheme I could think of that I wouldn’t be sick of in a year when the block of the month finished! 😀
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your low volume backgrounds. I’m doing the QAL too and immediately went to the flickr group to look for these to comment there – I couldn’t find them. You should totally add them because it’s different than any of the others I’ve seen and I think others would love to see it too. Here’s the group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/skillbuilderbom/pool/
Thank you so much! They’re in the pool, they just got buried a bit by the giveaway and the new quilting stuff. 🙂 Plus all the other gorgeous blocks! So many people are participating, it’s amazing! I love seeing all the gorgeous interpretations of the same blocks. 🙂
HI!!! I love all of your projests!! I love your skill builder blocks!!! I am in this one!!! Love your colors!11
Thank you!! 😀 There are so many people participating in the skill builder BOM! It’s so much fun seeing everyone’s take on the same block. 😀 I’ll take a look for your blocks as well!
Wow, you have had a productive week! I love your low volume prints on the skill-builder block. I think that you should stick to them! How did you find such great low-volume prints? I want to use them in my Lucky Stars quilt but I have been struggling to find good ones.
Thanks Rebecca! 😀 I am debating if I want to float or frame the blocks and really not coming up with a solution. For the low volume prints, I’ve been collecting for a while! I found a bunch at Back Porch in Monterey, they have a section for them. Harts also has an okay selection down at the end, although they have more whites than creams. Then I picked up painter’s canvas, grunge, oval elements and the screen prints whenever I can. Oh and text prints of course! I have a bag stuffed full of my low volume prints. I should probably come up with a better storage mechanism at some point!
Oh, my! You have been busy. Love your SSM pillow.
Thank you! I had so much fun working on that pillow! Now I want one for myself. 😉
