Slowly making progress on some of my projects!
Progress
Jacob’s Heart Charity Quilt –ย Thanks to Karen @ CapitolaQuilter, I was able to get this quilt basted. So I finally faced my fears and gave free-motion quilting a go. It’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it IS done! I did a large stipple and only managed to break the needle once (when it somehow went into my FMQ foot) and the foot only fell off 3 times. Tension was great, though! I think it’s when I slow down too much and the pressure of moving the quilt drags the foot in the way of the needle. The times it fell off was because the foot got stitched into the quilting. It was…bizarre. After keeping it going fast, I had no more problems. Now I just need to figure out the binding!
Sew Sew Modern 2 –ย I finished the second paper-pieced feather for my partner’s multi-tasker tote. Penny @ sewtakeahike clued me into these clover fork pins, which really stabilizes paper-piecing and helps match up the seams.
That’s it for this week. Our monthly guild sew day is on Friday, and I’m hoping to get quite a bit done. Fingers crossed!

GORGEOUS feathers!!!! I want to make a quilt with one huge one. Oh, noooo – now I’m going to have to do it or I won’t stop thinking about it!
Hahaha thank you! A huge feather quilt sounds AMAZING!! Now I want to make one, too…Except huge paper-piecing patterns are SUCH a PITA to work with. But you can make one and it will be stunning and I will be jealous. ๐
Well done on giving FMQ a go – it looks fabulous!
Thank you! ๐ Of course, I didn’t photograph the parts with the sharp jaggies. lol I was surprised at how much faster it is than straight line quilting! Granted, that could be because I was doing a really large pattern…
“Fabulous, Harry, I love the feathers!” ๐
Sorry, it just came into my head! But I do love the feathers!
HAhahaha no need to apologize, it made me laugh! Thank you, now I need to figure out how I’m going to piece the background they’re going to sit in… I maybe should have planned this a little better. ๐
Well done on the FMQ!
Esther
Thank you! ๐ I have quite a few jaggies and stuff, but I can already tell I’m getting better. I’ll just keep practicing! ๐
I love your feathers! Beautiful!
Thank you! They’ve been a lot of fun to put together. ๐ Now I just need to figure out the background I’m piecing them into… lol
Slow is harder with FMQ and I’ll take a broken needle over bad tension any day – good job and congrats. Come shop on my shelves for binding fabric ๐
Thank you! It was getting the foot SEWN into the quilting that really blows my mind. That was always fun to undo. ๐
I have no idea what I want to do for the binding yet. Maybe orange? I have a pretty big cut of orange from that insane-o-sale. I will check that first, but I will keep your offer in mind. Thank you!!
The feathers are lovely! Great colors too.
Thank you! I’ve been working with low volume + navy for so long, it was a nice change of pace to use really rich, warm colors. ๐
I love the feathers! The colors you chose are so pretty!
Thank you!! I’ve been working with navy for a while, and it was nice to take a break to work with rich, warm tones. ๐
I love love love the feathers – and thanks for sharing the pins! I do a lot of paper piecing so I think I need to get some of those.
Thank you!! The pins are great for really holding things together. I still line up seams using a single pin, but then use the fork pins once it’s lined up. I might not be using them exactly correctly, either… lol
Really lovely feathers!
Thank you! Now I just need to figure out the background design that I’m going to have them sit on. I maybe should have planned that a bit more.. ๐
I think your FMQ looks awesome! I’m still not brave enough to try it on a quilt yet- just keep practicing on my little sandwiches.
And I love your feathers- beautiful colors!
I have a lot of jaggy and sharp points, but for the most part it came out okay! I am doing it on a charity quilt and keeping in mind that the mistakes will disappear once it’s washed and crinkly! Here’s hoping anyway! You can totally do it!
Great work on the FMQ! And your feathers… just gorgeous!
Thanks so much! I feel like I have the courage to try FMQing again, now. ๐ I want to be able to do some of those gorgeous and intricate designs, but I have quite a lot of practice between me and that! lol
