It’s been an insane last couple of weeks, but I think I am past all my crazy deadlines and just have a few low-key ones ahead! Yay!! So it seemed like a great time for a WIP post.
But first a query: Is anyone else going to Sewing Summit? I will be there! Yay! I need to figure out the classes, though! Also, I have a friend with an extra ticket, so if anyone’s looking, let me know!
On to the sewing! There’s been a lot of secret sewing going on over here, but now that everything is finished and gifted, I can actually share it, yay! There will be more in-depth design posts about these finishes later this week, but here is the quick and dirty are for now.
First up is the Briar Rose churn dash quilt that the South Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild made for Julia, who has been our secretary for the last two years. She’s leaving to go to LA to learn textile design and I am going to miss her terribly. 🙁
Our guild also had a negative space challenge swap, and I pulled Karen’s name (CapitolaQuilter). She’s a good friend, but we have pretty different styles, so this was definitely outside of my comfort zone! I’m really happy with how it came out, but it required a lot of hand-holding from my friends to get me here. I know she’s been really fascinated by the houndstooth pattern, so I designed this with that in mind. And of course I had to batik bomb it for her!
Because I’ve had all these secret projects, sew days have been challenging lately, so I’ve been carting my bento box quilt around. I only have one border left to go, but it’s getting big enough that it’s hard to take pictures. Above is the picture when I was 1/2 done with the latest border.
And then of course I’m hard at work with the Palette Builder. I’m working on making it save the Kona information but I’m trying to figure out the right way to go about it. If you have opinions and are interested in helping, please drop me a line! I’d love to chat about it so I can make sure it’s done right!

love the “batik bombing” – both the phrase itself and the concept!
Hahahaha Karen and I have had fun with that in the past. I find some of the light batiks work great mixed in with low volume prints. I’m not ready for a full-on batik-extravaganza, but I admit I have relaxed my no batik rules since meeting Karen. 🙂
Beautiful quilts…….love the churn dash. Thanks for sharing. Marie (mlismore@optusnet.com.au)
Thank you so much! We spent a lot of time deliberating on which block to do, but once it was decided, it came together very quickly. 🙂
Wow Anne, that Briar Rose churn dash quilt is sooo gorgeous! Can’t wait to see your bento box quilt finished too.
Thank you!! It was so fun putting together the Churn Dash quilt. Definitely my favorite complete for the last month. 🙂 I ALSO can’t wait to see the bento box quilt finished. It’s been a WIP for over a year now. lol
I am in love with that Churn Dash quilt. Is that your cute dog in the picture?
Thanks so much! I am really happy with how the churn dash came together. 🙂 And that is my dog! She’s a Saint Bernard and I have about a billion pictures of her, so I tend to use them for testing with the palette builder. lol
I’d love to go to the Sewing summit but the date us bad for me this year… Maybe next year.
Love your churns! Thanks for all you do with the palette builder, its a great tool!
Awww, I’m sad you can’t go this year. I hope you can make it next year! I hear it’s a great deal of fun. This will be my first time. 🙂
Thanks so much for the encouragement and compliments!! 😀
Oh Smushka how I want to smush thee. Haha. Anyhow – I was thinking the other day how it had been kind of quiet from you… due to all this secret sewing! Hope you have a wundabar time at sewing summit. I like the negative space challenge a lot. I think Karen will dig it. The echo quilting around the batik bomb makes it pop.
She would love to be smushed!! It has been really quiet from me. 🙁 I’ve been programming (BORING to talk about) and so what little sewing time I had was devoted to stuff I couldn’t talk about (BORING to hear about) so I figured I was better off just not talking. 🙂 I have three or four blog posts planned though. Tidal wave effect!
Karen was super pleased with the table runner! (Well, at least she said she was. lol) Yay!
i love love love what you made for Karen! I don’t have any suggestions for the palette builder (it’s super cool) but you know I love the pictures of mishka:)
Thank you!! I swear I had so much designer insecurities with that stupid thing. lol And then I put the binding on and it was like “oh. yes. yay!” Pictures of Mishka, coming right up!! 😉 Actually, if you’re serious, I have SO many photos of her, I just made her a tumblr. I’m considering making a facebook page, too because I am SUCH a nerd for my dog.

Love your churn dash! And the negative space one is just gorgeous, but i really can’t wait to see your bento’s finished up, so pretty!
And i totally blame you for the lack of productivity around my neck of the woods 😉 … your palette builder is soooo much fun!
Thank you so much!! I’ve been working on that bento box quilt for over a year now, and I gotta say, I’m kinda sick of the color scheme. lol I’m sure once it’s done I will be happy about it, but for right now it’s such a “year ago” color scheme that it’s hard to get excited about it.
I take full responsibility for productivity loss. 😀 I’m so pleased you enjoy it!!! <3
That table runner is crazy good. Karen is one lucky gal.
Awwww, thank you! I had so much design angst over that thing, it was silly. The original design was done in black, white and grey, and I kinda want to make that version for myself. 😀
Oh my gosh! I am so in love with all your projects!! Thank you for putting a name to the batik bomb concept. I do it all the time and had no idea what to call it! 😉
Hahahaah Karen and I came up with that term at the guild retreat last year. We actually just made a flickr group for adding projects with batik bombing in it. Because we are dorks. Well, I’m a dork, anyway!
Anyway, come join us!

I love your churn dash! And batik bomb made me LOL 🙂
Thank you! The churn dash was one of the few times where my vision of the quilt pretty much matched the final product. Most of the time they’re not really that close. lol
