I’m constantly engaged in this balancing act of wanting fewer deadlines and sewing-related stress (it’s supposed to be fun, right?), but craving the creativity-inducing constraints that come from making secret things for other people. I admit it, I love combing my partner’s flickr favorites, what they’ve made, what they’re drawn to, stalking checking their blog, it’s just fun!
Which is just another way of me saying that even though I promised myself no more swaps, I totally just signed up for another swap. Oops. At least it’s a fast one!
First up, though, is the Sew Sew Modern 3 swap. I’m making a Heather Ross-tastic pillow cover for my Heather Ross-loving partner. I’ve been wanting to play with the Square in a Square design, and spent some time futzing around with color placement to get a different secondary design. I ended up with this, which I realized afterwards actually mimics a fancy granny square. So I’m calling it Square in a Granny Square! It’s quilted, now I just need to make it into a pillow cover and make the small item to go with it.
The second swap I just joined was for sewing summit. I’ll be heading there in September, and couldn’t say no to a quick in-person swap! I’ve picked the fabrics, and I’m working on the Bloomin’ design by Let’s Eat Grandpa. I’m in love with every version of this I’ve seen made, so I’m pleased I finally have a good excuse to make one. I am already wondering how I’m going to get all those fabrics onto my panel, but I’m not that worried. These are so fun, I won’t mind if I need to make it again!
These really will be the last swaps of the year for me, because it’s moving into Christmas quilt making time!! (Which let’s be honest, is just a slightly different type of swap. ;))

I love your pillow cover, and you are right it does resemble a granny square, but with so much more going on. I also think those fabrics will look great in your other project!
Thank you! π I’ve made a little progress on the QAYG, and I think I pulled enough fabric to make something twice as big as I’m making. lol I’m culling as I go, but I still worry it won’t have any aqua in it by the time I’m done. π
What a great pillow cover. I love the fussy cut blocks. Looking forward to seeing how your Bloomin’ design turns out. I love sewing those myself.
Thank you for your encouragement! π You’ve made the bloomin’ design before? How do you estimate how much fabric you’ll need? I’m having a really hard time with that part.
I love your “Square in a Granny Square”!! Great job!
Thank you! π It was really fun to put together! It’s one of those rare times where the actual project looks how I envisioned it beforehand. π
I love how you have used the square in square block… and using the Heather Ross fabric is perfect.
Thanks so much! π I had fun picking out a Heather Ross rainbow, although it turns out my rainbow is pretty light in some areas. Guess I’ll just have to get more fabric. π
Lovely cushion cover! The fabrics and colours are delightful!
Thank you! π I am a bit smitten with rainbow + low volume + linen, so I’m always excited when I have a chance to go that direction. π
your cushion cover is amazing!! The square in square is a fun block to make and you are so clever for coming up with a secondary design. Your swap partner is going to be over the moon!!
Thanks Gina! I’ve been fascinated by secondary patterns lately, so every chance I get I play around with it. Some of them work better than others. lol This one I’m really pleased with, though!
I sure hope you’re right, I’d love to make my partner happy. π
What a lovely bunch of prints! Love the giant granny squares you made with them–what a fun little quilt!
Thank you, Renee! The granny square wasn’t on purpose, I just noticed it when I was looking at the photo thumbnail at some point. π Serendipity is fun!
Love this! I’m addicted to the square in square blocks, but to turn it into a square in granny square… that just blows my mind! Your partner is so lucky!
Thank you! π The granny square design wasn’t my original intention, it was just a fun design coincidence! I mostly wanted to play with breaking up the squares and making them relate more with the surrounding blocks. π
I hope my partner likes it!
Is your post on 8/29 supposed to be password protected? I’m considering joining that QAL and would like to read your post about it if possible
Oh man, I’m a total doofus. So that post wasn’t supposed to post! I’m scheduled to guest post on Tuesday, so I wrote up a draft for Molli, put a password on it, and didn’t realize that it would actually push the post out to everyone’s RSS feeds and bloglovin’. Anyway, long story short, come back Tuesday and you can read an actual non-password protected post. π I’m so sorry for the confusion!
Hopefully you will get some ideas and decide to join the QAL. It should be lots of fun. π
