So last week I decided on a whim that I really wanted to enter a quilt into a local show entitled Amish: A Modern Muse. They wanted Amish-inspired designs, and how that is interpreted is left vague on purpose. I was at the Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild‘s meeting to give a lecture on color theory, and I stuck around for their Sew & Tell. Seeing all their amazing entries made me realize I desperately wanted to enter too.
So the next day (Sunday) I thought about the challenge while I worked on my QDAD, and I ended up with a design I really liked. However, I wanted to make a few changes so it felt more Amish-inspired.
I removed the angled lines (that seemed more Gees Bend) and changed the colors to be more representational of the message I was trying to convey. Then I played with the layout a bit and came up with this. Sold!
The next day (Monday) I went to my LQS and bought some yardage of Kona Indigo and Kona Wasabi. (And wow, I make a mess when I go fabric shopping!) Then I went home and started cutting.
On Tuesday I started sewing, and on Wednesday I finished the top. It went together really quickly since the pieces were so large. It’s really difficult to get a good photo, but that’s an acidic yellow-green, not yellow in there.
On Thursday I realized I should baste the quilt before the weekend, and I thought that maybe I’d just go ahead and baste some of my other tops at the same time. So I pulled out my pile of tops from the year.
Um, oops, I guess it’s been a while since I’ve finished a quilt. So I went to the store and bought MORE yardage, and had a back making party that night. I made 8 backs. PHEW.
On Friday, I went to a friend’s house who has some floor space, and we had a basting party. Wow, that was a lot of work. But look at this stack of basted quilts I ended up with!
And then over the weekend I didn’t touch the quilt because I was trying to figure out how to quilt it. I should really go do that. I still need to quilt, bind, and add a sleeve and label, all by next Tuesday! It will get done, somehow. It always does. 🙂
Linking up to WIP Wednesday with Lee @ Freshly Pieced. And hopefully next week I can show you a finish!
